School of Journalism
The
Ryerson School of Journalism, at the centre of downtown Toronto,
offers a dynamic, hands-on learning environment in Canada's largest
city and media capital.
Student reporters
use the vibrant and diverse streets of Toronto as their workshop.
Students write, report, broadcast and publish under the guidance of
world class faculty members who work in the
industry and hold students accountable to excellent standards.
Once they have completed their foundational courses students are
free to choose courses to suit their interests and their
strengths.Their work appears in a variety of forms and publications
including a weekly campus paper, The Ryersonian, and the
award-winning magazine Ryerson Review of Journalism. Ryerson
Journalism students receive the hands-on experience necessary to
not only obtain jobs as reporters and producers, but also to excel
in the newsroom.

Students are
introduced to journalism as practiced across all forms of media
within the first two years, after which they may choose courses to
concentrate in a specific medium (online,
newspaper, magazine or broadcast) or gain expertise in a
cross-media skill such as editing, or in a specific beat in
journalism (including sports, business or international
reporting).
After taking
courses building skills and evaluating theories associated with
journalism, students may finish their program with an
internship at a professional news organization
and/or with the chance to produce The Ryersonian, The Ryerson
Review of Journalism andRyersOnline, or news and public affairs
programs for radio and television.
Students are
coached and assisted by instructors drawn from major newspapers,
magazines, online news, and television and radio
networks.



Admission
Requirements
Six Grade 12 U/M
credits, including English, (ENG 4U/Anglais (EAE4U) with a minimum
average of 70 percent or higher. (Competition for spaces is tight,
and marks are generally much higher.)
Minimum
Grades
To
retain the clear academic standing you'll need for continuing your
degree studies and for graduation, you must maintain a
minimum grade point average (GPA), which is the average of
the grades you attain for individual courses.
Generally, the
university's minimum GPA is 2.00, which
roughly translates to a minimum average grade of no lower than C.
But the School of Journalism maintains additional requirements for
students in the four-year program, including a minimum grade of C
in first-year reporting courses and successful completion of a
Grammar test.

Internships
The Journalism
program includes an optional internship (or
equivalent) in the final year for students. In the broadcast,
newspaper and online streams an internship consists of six weeks'
work in a newsroom, or on a TV or radio show-faculty members will
help you find these positions. In the magazine stream, the
internship-equivalent consists of a full-year placement as a staff
member for one of two annual issues of the Ryerson Review of
Journalism. All these positions are supervised and graded by
Ryerson faculty and are unpaid.
